The Victorian Coding Challenge (VCC) is now open for registrations for Term 2, 2024. This exciting initiative, presented by MAWA in collaboration with The Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) and Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria (DLTV), is not only open to schools but also to individual students whose schools do not offer this activity and to homeschooling students.

Who Can Participate?

The VCC is available to students in Years 5-10 and is specifically targeted towards high-ability students who have a passion for coding or are curious to explore it further.

What to Expect?

Students with a creative yet logical mindset, who love to problem solve engaging, real-world problems, are encouraged to participate in the coding challenge. The VCC aims to extend curious minds, nurture passions, and support students in refining their coding skills.

Challenge Details

Students will receive a virtual kit containing a series of fun and engaging coding tasks. These tasks can be completed via a user-friendly online platform, accessible from both school and home. The challenges will require students to apply coding and algorithmic thinking to solve interesting problems. Students can work on these tasks at their own pace, either at school or during school holidays. Scaffolding and coding resources will be provided for additional support, and teachers will have access to suggested solutions.

Registration Information

Registration is open, and the coding kits will be available from the start of Term 2, accessible until the end of the year. The cost per student is $12, and teachers and parents can register their students using the provided registration form. Once completed and emailed to the MAWA Office, the school or parent will be invoiced, and access will be provided accordingly.

Year Level Categories

The VCC is divided into the following year level categories:

    • Years 5 & 6
    • Years 7 & 8
    • Years 9 & 10
    • Target audience: High-ability students

This initiative aims to encourage and support students in their coding journey, regardless of their schooling situation. If you’re interested in participating, we encourage you to register and embark on this exciting coding challenge!
