The Mathematical Association of Western Australia will host the 2024 Virtual Maths Conference on Friday 3 May. The theme for this conference is “small steps, big impact”.

The late Dr Derek Hurrell was admired by many as an educational visionary. In his honour, MAWA has brought together WA’s foremost educational leaders for a day of motivating and stimulating professional learning. Come and be inspired as we celebrate Derek’s practical and humorous approach to teaching maths. This workshop is designed to build teacher capacity for engaging students and nurturing mathematical problem solving and reasoning.

Learn how to quickly and easily elevate routine activities in early childhood environments into learning experiences that facilitate quality maths talk and develop the underlying concepts of mathematical understanding.

Multiplicative thinking is fundamental to the development of many key mathematical concepts, such as base ten place value, measurement, and proportional reasoning. Yet, it’s teaching is seldom approached in a systematic, methodical and integrated way that fosters deep understanding, mastery and flexibility.
