
The Service to MAWA award is to recognise someone who has made a long-term (at least five years) contribution in supporting MAWA events, and whose significant commitment directly supports MAWA’s mission to promote mathematics, mathematics education, and its importance to society.
If you have a worthwhile candidate you would like to nominate, please complete the form below. Successful recipient’s will be recognised in November at the WA Annual Maths Conference.
Process for awarding Service to MAWA recognition:
- Anyone can nominate a person for Service to MAWA recognition and must do so by completing a nomination form. This will include an outline of the persons contribution.
- A nomination form can be downloaded from the MAWA website.
- After a nomination is received by MAWA it is presented to the MAWA Board for consideration and endorsement.
- The MAWA Board will consider the nomination based on the information provided and supporting evidence.

Meet our previous award recipients
Wendy Pero
Awarded in 2025
Wendy has convened the MAWA annual conference from 2017 to 2024. In this role she planned and prepared the conference program and spent many hours proof-reading the offers to present and conference book. She was an active member of the MAWA committee/board for many years. She shared her expertise by presenting numerous workshops at conferences. Wendy has been an active member of course advisory committees for many years.
Belinda Miller
Awarded in 2025
Belinda was a teacher in the PS program for 2020 to 2023. She delivered excellent online lessons and took an active role in preparing the materials for the Newton level. Belinda ensured that HSF Face-to-Face was established in the Peel region by coordinating the competition at Baldvis SC on a Saturday! Belinda has also presented workshops to support secondary teachers and willingly shares her knowledge, expertise and OLNA knowledge and resources.
Ian Hailes
Awarded in 2024
Ian has been a regular presenter at MAWA’s annual conference, taught in our problem-solving program, exhibited at the annual maths expo, and engaged positively with families to add value to these events. He has also assisted in hosting HSF Live, and recently, he generously offered to be the teacher contact for families registering their children in the Victorian Coding Challenge.
Leah Carlin
Awarded in 2024
Leah has been a dedicated supporter of the expansion of Have Sum Fun Face-to-Face into Bunbury for many years. For many years, she has hosted and coordinated all competitions from Year 5/6 to Year 11/12. Even after changing schools, Leah continued to enthusiastically host this event. Through her efforts, Leah has not only raised MAWA’s profile within the South West region but has also provided over 100 students with valuable opportunities to further their mathematics education and enjoyment.
