Applications for NMSS 2026: Open: May 2025. Closing Date: July 31, 2025.

The National Mathematics Summer School (NMSS) is an exciting program designed to nurture the mathematical talents of gifted students entering Year 12. Held at the Australian National University in Canberra from 5-18 January 2025, this two-week residential summer course offers an immersive experience like no other.

With up to seven students selected from Western Australia, participants will engage with mathematicians in various branches of mathematics at an advanced level. Guided by a team of dedicated tutors, including postgraduate students, maths teachers, and academic mathematicians, students will delve into the depths of mathematical exploration.

The heart of the NMSS lies in its in-depth study of three to four different areas of mathematics, each presenting significant challenges that push students beyond their limits. But don’t be mistaken, this program is far from competitive. It’s all about getting hands-on and actively doing mathematics, not just listening to lectures.

By the end of the two weeks, students are often astonished by their own accomplishments. Post-school surveys reveal that the NMSS has successfully expanded their intellectual horizons, leaving them with a newfound belief in their own potential.

To learn more about the NMSS and the application process, visit http://nmss.edu.au. Remember, the deadline for completed applications is 31st July, so seize this chance to embark on a mathematical journey like no other.

Linda shares her experience of National Mathematics Summer School in 2022 as part of the Inexperienced Group (IG) and in 2023 as an Experienced Group (EG) student. These experiences have been highlights of her high school years, reaffirming her passion for mathematics and inspiring her to pursue it further.

Currently (2024), Linda is a second-year undergraduate studying mathematics at the University of Cambridge. While she hasn’t decided on a specific area of mathematics to specialise in, she is passionate about applying mathematical concepts to tackle real-world challenges. Her interests include geoengineering solutions to combat climate change, aerodynamics, advancements in artificial intelligence, and market analysis.

Message from the NMSS Convenor

Dear Colleagues,

The National Mathematics Summer School is an invaluable opportunity for the development of our top students. A great deal of effort is made to provide a rich and entertaining two weeks of Mathematics for the few dozen who are selected from throughout Australia.

Those mathematically gifted students who are not intending to specialise in mathematics are also welcome. All students currently studying Year 11 Mathematics can be considered, regardless of age.

The costs and awards available are detailed below.

I hope that you will promote this event with your gifted students, perhaps by providing them this MAWA web page address. The NMSS website below should answer most questions. Please get in touch with me through MAWA if you require further information.

All the best,

Mark White
NMSS Convenor for Western Australia

When does my application have to be done?

31 July. Earlier is better as it gives your teachers and referees time to do their part.

How much does NMSS cost?

NMSS Costs

The approximate fee per WA student is $2000, which covers the two-week residential program, catering and return travel to Canberra from any Australian capital city.

I am a Year 10 student. Can I apply?

Unfortunately NMSS is only open to Year 11 students to apply.

I have misplaced the email with information to support a student application.

The Teacher, HOLA and Referee forms can be accessed below.

I would like to sponsor the students who attend NMSS.
