International Day of Maths 2025

It’s competition time!

MAWA invites you to celebrate the International Day of Mathematics with a Mathematics Scavenger Hunt

What is the International Day of Mathematics?

The International Day of Mathematics is the opportunity the explain and celebrate the essential role that mathematics and mathematics education play in breakthroughs in science and technology, improving the quality of life, empowering women and girls, and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda (SDG1-17) of the United Nations. Read about them here: THE 17 GOALS | Sustainable Development

Read about how mathematics can contribute to achieving these goals here: About the IDM | International Day of Mathematics

MAWA’s Mathematics Scavenger Hunt is designed to be a game where small teams or individuals  search for mathematically interesting items from a list and take pictures of them. An activity about discovery, creative thought, and looking at things from a mathematical perspective.

The competition has two sections, with different entry forms.

K-Year 2: Class/Family entries.

Year 3-9: Individual/Family  entries

Winners will be selected at random and presented with the following prizes.

Primary Students

PP-2 – Class prize $100 Maths Store Voucher

Yr 3-6 – Individual Entries: $25 Maths Store Voucher

Secondary Students

Yr 7-9 – Individual Entries only : $25 Maths Store Voucher

Entry forms are here:

Early Childhood Form

Years 3-10 Form

Simply hunt around your school or neighbourhood to find the items listed on the form.  When an item in the list is found the team should take a picture of it. “Staging” the picture (creating the requested thing instead of finding it spontaneously) is a valid strategy that should be considered. Lateral thinking and creative interpretation of instructions is encouraged. Many items can be interpreted in different ways, and it’s OK to consider the alternative meanings (it’s more scientific, in fact).

Add your photos to the entry form along with your contact details, and email the completed form back to MAWA at reception@mawa.edu.au.

Create and Share!

Share your scavenger hunt photos with the world using the hashtags #idm314hunt and #idm314 on social networks!

ENTRIES CLOSE Friday March 21st

We will feature some of the more creative, and winning entries on our socials and winners will be notified via email.
