Multiplicative Thinking in Action: A Whole School Approach

Kate Doepel & Dr Chris Hurst

Kate Doepel

Kate possesses a wealth of experience teaching and leading primary school mathematics. She is passionate about building whole school approaches that build teacher capacity to maximise student success. She participated in MAWA’s 2 year Multiplicative Thinking Intervention Project 2019-2020, and has since presented on the subject alongside Dr Chris Hurst at the MAWA 2023 Annual Maths Conference in Perth. Kate now works as one of MAWA’s Professional Learning Consultants where she can truly indulge her passion and talent for designing and delivering engaging professional learning opportunities.

Dr Chris Hurst

I trained as a primary teacher and taught in various jurisdictions for 37 years before completing my PhD in 2007. From 2006 to 2020, I was an academic in the School of Education at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. I am currently an Adjunct Research Fellow at Curtin and am an active researcher. My main interests lie in multiplicative thinking, children’s capacity to make appropriate computational choices, and mathematical content knowledge of primary teachers.

  • Multiplicative thinking is fundamental to the development of many key mathematical concepts, such as base ten place value, measurement, and proportional reasoning. Yet, it’s teaching is seldom approached in a systematic, methodical and integrated way that fosters deep understanding, mastery and flexibility.

Description

Did you know?

Students who do not think multiplicatively do not generally progress beyond middle primary mathematics. Research has shown that issues with multiplicative thinking are not confined to the primary years but continue to impact student achievement in Years 7, 8 and 9 as well.

Multiplicative thinking is fundamental to the development of many key mathematical concepts, such as base ten place value, measurement, and proportional reasoning. Yet, it’s teaching is seldom approached in a systematic, methodical and integrated way that fosters deep understanding, mastery and flexibility.

MAWA Presents: Multiplicative Thinking in Action: A Whole School Approach.

This full day Professional Learning opportunity;

  • clearly maps how Multiplicative Thinking underpins much of the maths curriculum.
  • explains the multiplicative references in curriculum descriptors (all AC Versions).
  • provides evidence based, teaching and learning tasks with detailed teacher notes.
  • uses targeted diagnostic and formative assessments to analyse student misconceptions, track progress and clearly inform teaching and learning.
  • includes innovative tools to help students navigate and master the base ten system
  • includes growing library of video PL to upskill and support staff

Our resources are based on eight years of academic investigations, working with primary and lower secondary students. We have developed Curriculum, Teaching and Assessment tools which are ready for teachers to use to target the development of multiplicative thinking from Kindergarten on.
