2025 WA Annual Maths Conference

The Mathematical Association of Western Australia hosted the 2025 WA Annual Maths Conference at the Crown Convention Centre, Burswood, from 19–21 November, marking a wonderful celebration of mathematics education across the state.

The annual conference brought together teachers from early childhood, primary, secondary and post-secondary education, supporting them in expanding their professional knowledge, practice and engagement in mathematics education. All three days welcomed educators from K–12+, with Wednesday dedicated to Leaders.

This year’s conference theme highlighted the vital role educators play in fostering deep mathematical understanding. The conference equipped teachers with practical strategies, innovative resources and research-informed approaches that helped create engaging and meaningful learning experiences. With a strong focus on building teacher confidence and capacity, sessions explored ways to spark curiosity, develop problem-solving skills and guide students beyond rote learning toward genuine understanding.

As participants connected, collaborated and inspired one another, the event truly celebrated the shared commitment to transforming mathematics education across Western Australia.

Dr Matt Sexton

Dr Matt Sexton is the Director of the Mathematics Teaching and Learning Centre (MTLC) and Senior Lecturer at Australian Catholic University (ACU). Before working at ACU, Matt was a classroom teacher and numeracy coordinator in primary schools, as well as enacting the role of education sector mathematics consultant.

In 2024, Matt was awarded the Early Career Research Award at the MERGA conference for an outstanding paper and presentation that focused on his PhD about the leadership activity of mathematics leaders in schools.

With a passionate commitment to building relationships through school-university partnerships, Matt works closely with schools, often teaching mathematics lessons and working with students, teachers, and mathematics leaders in school settings. Matt’s academic interests include mathematics leadership practice in schools, the development of teachers’ mathematical pedagogical reasoning, and pedagogical practices that engage students in mathematics learning.
