Your membership and accessing member prices

For institutional members you can now upload a CSV file of your staff (name and email addresses) to our member dashboard. This will ensure that your staff are receiving MAWA communications and not just you. Your staff will also receive all the member benefits when purchasing on behalf of themselves or the school. Please remember, you will only be able to access member prices if you are logged into the MAWA website and shop. If your membership is current and you don't have a login, you will need to create a user account using your email address, and the system will match it up with your membership. If you have any issues, please contact the MAWA office 08 9345 0388. 

When entering your institutional details, please use SHS for senior high schools. However for secondary colleges and primary schools we need the name written in full; e.g., Melville SHS, Baldivis Secondary College or Koondoola Primary School.

Thank you to the many educators who sent through information, suggestions, and comments about the proposed revised Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. I had been busy compiling the information and submitting the MAWA feedback.

In May Tom, MAWA Student Activities Coordinator, and I spent three days in Albany visiting the schools in the region. We had the opportunity to visit nine schools and share information about how MAWA can support the teachers and students. I would like to thank Rob Berwick, MAWA Great Southern Regional Ambassador, for organising the Maths Meet. It was a great evening of sharing maths stories and activities. 

Tom and I were visiting schools in Karratha and Port Hedland last week. For those in the Peel region we will be visiting in August and look forward to catching up with primary and secondary teachers in the region. Our plan is to visit other regions of WA in 2022, if you are interested in having us visit, please let us know helpdesk@mawainc.org.au.

As a MAWA member we are offering you free professional learning opportunity with the Term 3 Classroom Corner on Cuisenaire Rods for Year 1 – Year 7. The Classroom Corner will be offered face-to-face and online. There is still some availability for schools or networks to book professional learning in Term 3, though not on a Tuesday afternoon. The Mathematical Association of Western Australia invites you to the 2021 WA Annual Maths Conference to be held at the Crown Convention Centre, Burswood 17 – 19 November. We are pleased to announce Catherine Attard as our keynote speaker on Thursday and James Tanton as our keynote speaker on Friday.

Catherine is an Associate Professor at Western Sydney University and current President of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA).

Australian-born James is a mathematician for the Mathematical Association of America and is the founder of the Global Math Project.

The 2020 global pandemic saw society experience the ways in which mathematics can be used to communicate statistics, explain reasons for actions and identify the effectiveness of vaccinations. However, using mathematics to explain the world is not new as mathematics has led the way for centuries. Our theme, Maths: Leading the Way, will give you the opportunity to explore the endless possibilities that maths provides.

The annual conference aims to assist teachers from early childhood education, primary, secondary and post-secondary with their professional knowledge, practice and engagement in mathematics education.

2021 Virtual Maths Conference
 

The Mathematical Association of Western Australia invites you to our first ever full virtual conference. The 2021 Virtual Maths Conference to be held 29 November.
We are pleased to announce Tom Crawford as our keynote. Tom will be joining us live from the UK and is the face of the Tom Rocks Maths outreach program.

Our theme Maths: Engaging Everyone Everywhere encapsulates inclusion despite location.

The virtual conference aims to assist teachers from early childhood education, primary and secondary with their professional knowledge, practice, and engagement in mathematics education. Registrations open 2 August and close 22 October.

As a conference delegate you will have access to all virtual sessions for 12 months.

MAWA presents Maths Empowering Girls Day!

Due to the June lockdown that the Perth-Peel region was placed in, we decided to reschedule the day to later in the year. The new date will be confirmed in coming weeks.

We were again blown away with the interest and support for this wonderful day and we look forward to delivering it later in the year to the 240 students registered to attend.

We want to change that, but recognise coordinating a localised competition for schools over such vast distances is impractical and will take time. Classroom Corner

Topic: Working with Cuisenaire Rods

Tucked away in the back of many maths storerooms collecting dust are boxes of Cuisenaire rods. During this workshop we will use these concrete materials for number work, fractions, and area whilst focusing on understanding and reasoning.

It would be ideal if you had a set of Cuisenaire rods to use during the workshop, however, a paper substitute will be provided for those attending the virtual session.
