Welcome to 2022. While the New Year will no doubt serve up some new challenges, MAWA is confident that we will continue to overcome them, and we are looking forward to our biggest year yet! During the hottest week in January, we held the WA Maths Summer School with seventeen amazing Year 11 students. The students engaged in a variety of lectures and workshops that exposed them to maths beyond the standard Year 11/12 curriculums. MAWA’s flagship Have Sum Fun Online will happen as usual in Terms 2, 3 and 4 for students from Year 3 to Year 10. If your child’s school is not participating, then you can register your child in the individual competition. The benefits of online is that location is no barrier, so you can be anywhere in WA or Australia and still compete.Click here for more info or to register. We are looking forward to MAWA’s annual Maths Expo on Sunday 13 March. This is a free event designed to provide information and showcase resources that support the teaching and learning of mathematics at home. It is a fantastic opportunity to play some games that have a mathematics focus and encourage understanding and fluency whilst reducing anxiety about mathematics. Should you wish to attend, registration is free and available at www.mawainc.org.au. The Western Australian Mathematics Problem Solving Program (WAMPSP) is celebrating 30 years in 2022. This program offers mathematically able students an opportunity to extend their problem-solving skills and be involved in national competitions. If you are interested in learning more about this program and applying for 2023, please click here. Each year MAWA holds a Maths Empowering Girls Day for Year 9 students. We are always looking for professionals that work in careers that involve mathematics. If you are interested in learning more about how you or your workplace could assist, please email [email protected]. As a not-for-profit organisation, MAWA continues to be thankful for your patronage in 2021. We look forward to working alongside you once again in 2022. Dr John West President |
