Term 3 focus: Algebra Years 5-9
Presenter: John West
Algebra is one of those topics that almost everyone has been taught but which very few people feel that they ever truly understand. Recent research suggests that a lot of this is the result of the way in which mathematics has been taught over the last 50 years. The aim of this workshop is address the elephant in the room by exploring questions such as: What is algebra? Why do we teach it? Why do students suddenly seem to struggle when algebra is introduced?
This workshop is probably for you if you’ve ever wondered Why couldn’t my teacher explain algebra to me in a way I could understand? or Why did I have to learn algebra at school when I’ve never used it?
The way these questions are answered (or derided or ignored) can lead to a lifelong love or loathing of mathematics depending on whether or not you are able to view the world through a mathematical lens. Dr John West has worked as a mathematics teacher and lecturer in mathematics education. He is the author of a number of books and research articles on mathematics education.
