This workshop will focus on developing students’ intuitive ideas about algebra into a framework that can be used to help them to solve real-world problems. In this hands-on workshop, students will begin to see that the techniques they already use for representing information form the basis of algebraic thinking. This approach will then be extended in a way that will focus on developing an understanding of the power of algebra rather than specific algebraic techniques. Attention will also focus on dispelling common myths about algebra (e.g., that it is too difficult and too abstract) and alleviating student misconceptions that commonly arise in high school.
