2019 MATHS TALENT QUEST
Maths Talent Quest is a MAWA student activity that requires students to think creatively about complex real-life mathematical problems, thinking as a mathematician would. Open to students from K – 12, participation in this activity strongly supports students to develop an appreciation of mathematics across the STEM disciplines with an emphasis on strong communication skills and mathematical understanding.
This year we had ninety-two entries from over 300 students across Western Australian Primary and Secondary Schools. Our mathematicians of the future produced outstanding entries and the range of topics illustrates the diversity that can be found in the careers that are available to people with a strong mathematics background.
A big thank you must be given to our judges who have the tough job of trying to differentiate between the creative ideas and the different ways of communicating them. Each entry needs to be judged two or three times so without their support we would not be able to offer this activity. ECU preservice teachers are invited by MAWA to assist with the judging, helping us to get through the task and also offering valuable Professional Leaning to our future teachers about the mathematical investigative process. MAWA would like to acknowledge Sharon Schubert from Iona Presentation College who will represent WA as a VIP judge at the judging of the National Maths Talent Quest (NMTQ) on the 12th September.
All Distinction and High Distinction winners are invited to join us for the Award Ceremony to be held at Scitech on the 21st October. NMTQ winners will be announced at the ceremony and we wish all our eight WA entries the best of luck.
