Decimals - understanding & addressing difficulties and misconceptions

Kaye Treacy

Kaye has extensive experience in mathematics and numearcy education and has worked in primary and secondary schools in city, rural and remote locations.   She was one of the writers of the Foundation Mathematics series of books and the Mathematics Foundations course.

Kaye has worked with ACARA developing NAPLAN Numeracy tests and an online formative assessment tool.  While working with AISWA Kaye devleoped a numeracy intervention strategy and resources for K – Year 12 students in the Aboriginal Independent Community Schools of WA. She was a one of the team of researchers and writers of First Steps in Mathematics and worked in at risk schools during the implementation – the  Getting it Right Strategy, training and supporting Numeracy Specialist teachers.  Kaye currently works as a primary teacher in a metropolitan school.

Description

Students often leave primary school and go into high school with misunderstandings or gaps in their knowledge of decimals, which makes it hard for them to continue to progress through mathematics.

This workshop explores the mathematics of decimals and why students have so many issues, difficulties and misconceptions. We will look at asessment to uncover the issues and activities that target the needs of students to overcome these difficulties.
