MAWA MTQ has had an amazing year shifting online to a digital entry format and hosting the NMTQ, national competition. The quality of entries from participants was outstanding and we thank all our MTQ school coordinators for the work they did guiding their students with their investigations and uploading them digitally to our MAWA Dropbox page. Coordinators use this competition to engage their students in mathematics and to cater for the needs of gifted and talented students. MTQ allows students to follow their own mathematical interests and communicate their findings. Overwhelmingly coordinators reported having a positive experience with MTQ, because as students learn to investigate a topic as a mathematician would they develop a more positive attitude to the subject. As one coordinator stated, her students have really gained confidence because of their success in MTQ and are more likely to have a good crack at difficult problems as a result. The competition would not be successful if it wasn’t for the time dedicated by the school judges to evaluate each entry. Each entry is required to be judged three times so that a valid score can be given. The move to digital online judging reduced the need for transport and relief costs by schools and as a result of the positive feedback from schools, remote judging will continue to be an option in 2021. Tracing its history back to 1967, the original MAWA Maths Talent Quest created a plaque to recognise the achievements of students in the MTQ in a West Australian School. Following in this tradition, MAWA presents this award to a school that has demonstrated high achievement and participation in the Maths Talent Quest. The winner of the 2020 Outstanding School Award is Ashdale Primary School. Special recognition goes to Ellenbrook Secondary College who sponsored the venue for the NMTQ ceremony. This allowed WA participants to attend the event in person or remotely via a Zoom link. This was then recorded for use by the other affiliates of AAMT. A total of forty-five entries were submitted from K – 12 this year and eight were selected for the National competition. Congratulations to our students who participated in NMTQ and special recognition must be given to our four national winners from WA. An outstanding result!
