Julie Cairnduff is an experienced mathematics educator, curriculum leader and author with more than 25 years in Western Australian public education. She is a co-author of MAWA’s Foundation Mathematics series and has contributed to curriculum resources and professional learning that support high-quality mathematics teaching. Julie brings a strong evidence-informed approach, with expertise in mathematical reasoning and assessment for learning. Her work is guided by a commitment to advancing MAWA’s strategic priorities by connecting research, curriculum and classroom practice, building educator capability, and supporting sustainable, system-level impact in mathematics education across Western Australia.

Scaled instruments are introduced in primary school, yet many students continue to struggle with reading scales, interpreting intervals and working with time representations well into secondary years.
Description
In this Classroom Corner session, we will explore common misconceptions students experience with scales, timelines, elapsed time and non-standard increments across Years 6–10 mathematics. Through practical classroom tasks and live modelling of teaching routines, participants will unpack how questioning, representation and task design can strengthen student reasoning and interpretation skills.
This practical session will provide classroom-ready ideas and teaching approaches that help students move beyond simply “counting marks” to genuinely understanding what scales represent.
