President's Message

It’s been another really challenging year for parents and families. At MAWA we’ve been focused on continuing to offer high quality service to our families in a safe and timely manner, and we very much appreciate your patience. We thank you for your continued support of MAWA’s events and activities.

MAWA is always looking to expand its offerings for families, and we are keen to hear your ideas or suggestions. As a not-for-profit organisation we also rely on the support of a network of volunteers to enable us to operate in a sustainable manner.

Stay safe and we thank you for your commitment to supporting mathematics education in WA!

I hope that families enjoyed the Term 3 school holidays. I am positive that families with children in Year 12 have seen an increase in the amount of study and stress as they prepare for Semester 2 school exams and the WACE exams. We wish all Year 12 students the best for their future endeavours. It is important to remember that they are more than an ATAR score. Parents of Year 6 and Year 12 students enjoy your child’s school ceremonies as you celebrate the end of primary school or secondary school.

Early August MAWA hosted the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). This was a very popular event with over 100 students, from Year 3 to Year 9, attending over several days to participate in this prestigious competition. Congratulations to all students on their results whether to participated at MAWA or at your school. Our results included two prizes, 19 high distinctions and 26 distinctions.

Manning Primary recently hosted two mathematics parent workshops – Maths on the go! After learning about how important a growth mindset and resiliency is to engage in mathematics parents learnt a few maths games they could play at home. For more information about parent workshops please email helpdesk@mawainc.org.au. 

We are currently planning for the 2022 MAWA Maths Expo. The expo has been a huge success in the past. The 2022 expo will be held at Crown Convention Centre of Sunday 13 March. Save this date in your calendar and visit the MAWA website for further updates early in 2022.

As this is the last SIGMA for Families for 2021, I would like to wish all families a Happy Christmas and a safe holiday period.

Family Focus workshops

Family Focus workshops are designed for parents and families who want to learn more about how they can support their children's mathematics education at home.

If there is a topic of particular interest that you would like a workshop presented on, please contact the MAWA office on office@mawainc.org.au. 

Alternatively, you may know a few other parents who would like a particular workshop run. MAWA is happy to organise and run these workshops on demand. Please email office@mawainc.org.au to make enquiries.

Helpdesk

MAWA has developed a Helpdesk, aimed to assist teachers and parents with any questions in regard to mathematics education and learning. If you have a question about mathematics education, the curriculum, available resources for enrichment, remedial resources or even ideas and resources to make maths fun, feel free to email the helpdesk helpdesk@mawainc.org.au.

Please include in your email what area suits your query best; i.e.,Early Childhood Education (K-1), Primary Mathematics Years 2-3, Primary Mathematics Years 4-6, Secondary Mathematics Years 7-9, Secondary Mathematics Year 10, Secondary Mathematics Years 11-12, non-ATAR, ATAR Mathematics.
