President's Message

As you read this, preparations are being finalised for the 2021 WA Maths Conference. We hope that you will join us for the largest face-to-face professional learning event of its kind in the country. With presentations from top-billed local, national and international speakers, this is an event not to be missed.

As we approach the end of yet another year, a huge thank you to teachers and schools for your continued support of our Have Sum Fun Face-to-Face, Have Sum Fun Online and Maths Talent Quest competitions.

MAWA continues to look to expand its competitions and outreach activities across WA and is always looking for people and venues who might like to come onboard. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have an idea for an event; earlier this year it was my privilege to be invited to my very first Festival of Maths, and I’m hoping that it won’t be the last!

Each year we ask educators to provide their feedback through our Annual Educator Survey of the products and services that MAWA provides, and to assist us in expanding our offerings. I would like to extend my thanks to all that participated and to congratulate Diane Olejnik, who won the $100 voucher for The Maths Store!

Masterclasses
Feedback and enquiries have highlighted that people were looking for MAWA to run all day workshops at the MAWA Annual Maths Conference. We have developed two master classes that will run on Wednesday 17 November. The master classes are an opportunity to spend the day delving deeply into a topic. This year the masterclasses for primary educators are: Bond Blocks and Mathematical Investigations Year 5 to 9. Please see information in this edition of SIGMA.

Term 3 Review
Term 3 was an incredibly busy Term for MAWA. We delivered professional learning both face-to-face and online. I presented workshops at Darkan PS for the Great Southern Schools Network and at Newdegate PS for the Lakes Network. It is always a pleasure to work with teacher in the country.

As part of the MAWA commitment to regional schools, Tom and I, spent some time in the Pilbara. We visited all the school in Karratha, called upon Roebourne DHS and Wickham PS on the way to Port Hedland. During our outreach visit we delivered workshops on problem solving, strategies to support engagement and worked with the enrichment students at Tambrey PS. Our plans for 2022 include spending time in Geraldton and Kalgoorlie visiting and working with schools in those regions.

I would like to thank Manning PS for helping us trial our parent workshops. MAWA has developed two workshops K – Year 2 and Year 3 – Year 6 ‘Maths on the go!’ After learning about how important a growth mindset and resiliency is to engage in mathematics parents learn a few maths games they could play at home.

ACARA curriculum review information
Final revisions to the Australian Curriculum – Mathematics are being made following the public consultation period. Once approved by the education ministers the next version of the curriculum, Version 9.0, will be published on a new website in 2022. Please be aware that in Western Australia we will continue to use the WA Curriculum, Version 8.1 for at least 2022. For further information https://www.acara.edu.au/.

Professional Learning 2022
Start 2022 with our ‘On your marks, get set, go -Maths!’ two-day workshop. This workshop will include presentations from Paul Swan, Sheila Griffin, Julie Richards and Paula McMahon. For further information please click here.

The Mathematical Association of Western Australia invites you to the 2021 WA Annual Maths Conference to be held at the Crown Convention Centre, Burswood 17 – 19 November. We are pleased to announce Catherine Attard as our keynote speaker on Thursday and James Tanton as our keynote speaker on Friday.

Catherine is an Associate Professor at Western Sydney University and current President of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA).

Australian-born James is a mathematician for the Mathematical Association of America and is the founder of the Global Math Project.

The 2020 global pandemic saw society experience the ways in which mathematics can be used to communicate statistics, explain reasons for actions and identify the effectiveness of vaccinations. However, using mathematics to explain the world is not new as mathematics has led the way for centuries. Our theme, Maths: Leading the Way, will give you the opportunity to explore the endless possibilities that maths provides.

The annual conference aims to assist teachers from early childhood education, primary, secondary and post-secondary with their professional knowledge, practice and engagement in mathematics education.

2022 Virtual Maths Conference

The Mathematical Association of Western Australia invites you to our first ever virtual conference. The 2022 Virtual Maths Conference will be held on Monday 28 March 2022.
We are pleased to announce Tom Crawford as our keynote. Tom will be joining us live from the UK and is the face of the Tom Rocks Maths outreach program.

Our theme Maths: Engaging Everyone Everywhere encapsulates inclusion despite location.

The virtual conference aims to assist teachers from early childhood education, primary and secondary with their professional knowledge, practice, and engagement in mathematics education. Registrations are open, and close Sunday 13 February 2022.

Virtual conference rates are extremely afforable for everyone to attend, plus there is the option to upgrade your registration to gain access to all the conference recordings for 12 months. You can check out the fees here.

MAWA are hosting a brand-new competition this year! For too many years, regional schools have been unable to compete in a Have Sum Fun face-to-face competition. We want to change that, but recognise coordinating a localised competition for schools over such vast distances is impractical and will take time. But we don’t want students to miss out in the meantime, therefore:

What’s happening in 2021?

On Wednesday 1 December 2021 (Term 4 – Week 8), the MAWA Office in Mirrabooka will bring you a Zoom competition where all teams in all competitions will take on all participating schools in regional WA at the same time!

As we are new at this, we are going to host the 2021 competition for FREE!

Number talks are short (approximatley 10 minutes) daily excercises aimed at building number sense. These daily excercises are so much more than fluency. Number talks focus on students sharing and learning mental maths strategies whilst strengenting their msathematical vocabulary and understanding of how numbers are composed and decomposed.

Notre Dame’s Graduate Certificate in Education (Middle Years Mathematics)

Who is it for?

This rigorous postgraduate program has been carefully designed for primary and secondary teachers in Australian schools who wish to upskill, develop or improve their content knowledge, skills, and pedagogical approaches to teaching mathematics in Years 5 to 9.

Farewell Ms Berry

At the August WAMPSP Presentation Evening, MAWA formally reconised the significant contribution Ms Quita Berry made to the program over the five years of her service.

We had a great Term 3 holiday book club meet and were excited to learn that the author would be zooming into our friendly informal chat from 17 596km away. What is Bond Blocks?
