Romolo is the current President of The Mathematical Association of Western Australia. He has recently retired as from a position as a Curriculum Consultant for Mathematics with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority of WA. Rom is passionate about the teaching and learning of Mathematics in schools and universities, especially about helping the mathematically gifted, but also about helping students with learning difficulties. Recently he has been actively involved with promoting STEM programs in WA and with the writing of teacher resources such as investigative tasks and examination questions related to the WA senior school ATAR course syllabuses. Rom is also a AAMT councillor and a member of the project control group for the STEM Learning (K-12) Project for WA Government schools.

Richard has been involved in MAWA in a range of ways throughout his whole professional career. In 2005 Richard rejoined the MAWA Committee, holding positions such as President and Vice President. In 2015 Richard was awarded an Honorary Life Membership of MAWA.

Ed has been teaching maths in the public system for over 25 years from Year 7’s to Year 12 Maths Specialist. He has also taught Year 11 & 12 Physics for 7 years. Ed has a degree in Maths (Statistics) and an Honours Degree in Physics (Computational Physics). Ed has been a MAWA presenter for “Algebraic Misconceptions” and as a STAWA co-presenter for “Illustrating Arduino use with Linear Functions”. Ed is involved in introducing STEM into his maths classes and currently experimenting with the introduction of “coding” in his Year 7 maths class. Ed has been a member of the Greenwood Arduino Group for over 7 years. He dedicated 3 years part-time involvement with solar cell research at Murdoch University (amorphous hydrogenated silicon). Ed is currently watching all 6 seasons of Numb3rs to expand his expertise in maths.

As the treasurer, Julie is required to authorise payments and ensure that the office maintain accounting records appropriately. Julie is responsible for the monitoring and reporting of MAWA’s financial status. With a polymath background, Julie has postgraduate teaching qualifications (M. Teach. Primary, Grad. Cert. Maths Teaching). She still occasionally relief teaches and/or is a relief EA. Julie became the treasurer as MAWA required somebody for the job

Jack Bana

Jack Bana has been a member of the MAWA Committee every year since 1978. In most of that time he has coordinated the MAWA student activities. He is a past president of MAWA and an honorary life member, as well as being a Fellow of the Australian College of Education. His full-time profession was as a senior lecturer and also Director of the Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Centre at Edith Cowan University. He has presented at State, national and international conferences; as well as being the co-author of many mathematics textbooks for both students and teachers. Last year he was a member of the judging panel to select the top primary school in the State for the Governor’s STEM award.

Donna Buckley is a level three classroom mathematics teacher at John Curtin College of the Arts. Donna is passionate about promoting creativity in mathematics, ensuring gifted and talented mathematicians have opportunities to integrate the arts and mathematics in their learning through student’s activities such as Math Talent Quest. She enjoys developing her computer programming skills and promoting computer algebraic thinking through her school’s Informatics Club. Donna returns to the committee in 2016 to assist with Student Activities.

Paula McMahon’s original involvement with MAWA was to present at conferences before taking a more active role by assisting with the organisation of conferences and encouraging other teachers to present. Paula has been convening conferences for MAWA since 2010 and has coauthored several MAWA texts including Essential Mathematics Unit 3 and 4. Paula prides herself on advocating the needs of high school mathematics teachers to the committee when making decisions. In 2016 Paula was honoured in becoming a MAWA Life Member.

Wendy Pero has been teaching secondary mathematics at all levels for over 25 years. Her interests include educational measurement and assessment, and as a district panel member for the Queensland Studies Authority she was heavily involved in the moderation process of school-based assessment. Wendy is currently the Secondary Mathematics Consultant for Catholic Education Western Australia and is a member of the Curriculum Advisory Committee. She joined the MAWA Committee in 2016 and is responsible for organising the Secondary Mathematics Convention.

Peter enjoyed 18 years as a teacher and head teacher of Mathematics in rural NSW. In 2004 he was appointed to the University of New England as a lecturer in gifted and talented education. In 2013 he became a professor in the Faculty of Education at The University of Western Australia where he teaches Mathematics Education. His current research focuses on creativity and problem solving, in particular for high ability students.

Greg has been a teacher with the Education Department for 42 years, of which 40 years have been at the now called Sevenoaks Senior College. Greg has performed many roles such as head of learning area, coordinator of the Academic Talent Program and mathematics teacher. Greg started his own publishing business in the late 80s and has produced many series of books such as Math O Magic, Developmental Mathematics, etc together with various games books and upper secondary text books. During the 90s Greg was invited to join MAWA as the publications convener.
Over the last decade Greg has been involved in setting up a small community school (Heritage College Perth) and has served on its board since its foundation. This has given Greg additional perspective through involvement in the independent schools sector. Over the last few years Greg has served on the Curriculum Advisory Committee during the process of developing the new curriculum for the upper school maths courses.

Adam is a second year teacher undergoing the Teach For Australia program – a program design to help combat educational disadvantage by placing outstanding university graduates into socioeconomically disadvantaged schools. Teaching mathematics and science at Balga Senior High School and soon to complete his Masters of Teaching specialising in research, Adam is passionate about how research can help shape policy in disadvantaged schools. He joined the MAWA committee in 2016 with a desire to become involved with state and nation-wide strategies to increase numeracy, as well as to network with the many exceptional educators that MAWA comprises of.
